Karma is Knocking at our doors...
Seize the Moment; Karma is knocking at our doors!
By Gita Saraydarian
The karma caused by ugly speech has caught up with us once again! Now that the heat has cooled a bit, I can say a few words about right speech.
Remember Don Imus and his racist and belittling remarks about a woman’s basketball team? What about all the silly remarks people have made in the past year that has brought uproar and hurt from various parts of the human community? If we do not know how to heal our coarseness and try to refine ourselves, our behavior will always slip out just at the wrong moment and we will have to face the consequences.
When something is “caught on tape” it is as if the whole world broadcasting community freezes for a moment and concentrates only on this story. Was this the only time in the history of US broadcasting that the ugly language on the air offended someone? Absolutely not. So, why is it important? For one thing, Americans reached a moment in history where unkind remarks hit a raw nerve, at least for a few moments! The recipients are accomplished young ladies who did not in any way “earn such designations.”
But wait a minute, why then do we not shout and scream and bring out all the “big guns” when everyday someone is insulted, belittled, and criticized by the media and the ugliness in the talk radio shows? Why is it that we allow such language to be used on film, music, print media, and so on? Do we allow filth only if it is against those we find “deserve” it and we get offended only if it is against what we term “the innocent?”
We do have free speech, and yes we need to protect it. I do not think it wise to start the campaign of censorship. I believe in freedom.
However, with free speech comes responsibility. People who are only money oriented are not necessarily going to think of our great cultural values; they want to make money. If ugliness sells, they will sell it and if they get caught, oh well! They will respond when they get caught.
How to get ugliness to go bankrupt? By being vigilant. Do not support any organization, product, firm, or media that offends you. You vote every time you buy something. Every time you see an ugly movie, you support it. Every time you buy a DVD or CD that is offensive and belittling, or you allow your children to view and listen to it, you vote for its existence. Should you monitor everything that your children do? YES. If you do not, no one else will.
Now more than ever, parents need to watch their children like a hawk! Watch them carefully and instill in them the values of tolerance and cultural values. Instill in them your spiritual values and understanding others. You cannot monitor everything every moment of your child’s life, but you can instill in him or her the highest values that you hold dear. Tell them why the lyrics of songs are offensive. Explain how these ugly words and thoughts continue in the waves of the whole planet and surround us with pollution. Help them see that with every thought and word and deed, humanity suffers in the physical realm and the subtle realms as well. Tell them why this is important.
Why is it important? Because we all live in one world. Not only the physical world is one, but the subtle energies surrounding our planet permeates every person regardless of their physical location, their color, their religion, their beliefs and political choices. It does not matter where you are and who you are, you are being affected by the energies circulating in the world.
Karma means this: What goes around comes around and everyone has to account for the wrongdoings of their past. How do we stop the continuous building of hatred and intolerance? By remembering this one fact of nature: Nature will always adjust and respond to whatever energy is released into it.
The Law of Karma is a universal law of cause and effect. Whatever we put into motion, we will have a reaction from life. When we do something in thought, word, and deed, we will have a response to it. There is no escape whether you belong to one religion or the other; whether you are good looking or not; whether you are one skin color or another; whether you live in one mighty country or another. It makes no difference to Nature who and what we are. When we do something, we will see a response from life all around us. This is the basic version of the Law of Karma.

Thanks so much for these comments and ideas Gita! Right Speech has been on my mind a lot lately because it is so important. It is very embarrassing to be the 'busted' one like some of these well known people in the media. However, I see similar things happening in my own life. I really like what you said here: "Do we allow filth only if it is against those we find “deserve” it and we get offended only if it is against what we term “the innocent?”
I am learning too that there are times when I think I am using right speech, when in fact I am not. Right speech seems to be more than just refraining from saying ugly things.
Right speech seems to happen naturally when we are in right relationship with our brothers and sisters. Often though, I find myself out of sync with others because I am speaking the truth without love. If I try to shed light on a subject without love, it becomes hypocrisy simply because all truth necessarily contains love. The higher the truth the larger the love because Love is the highest truth we can know. It is that marriage of heart and mind that we seek, because the blending of light and love is very much the prerequisite to right relationship and right speech.
"Nature will always adjust and respond to whatever energy is released into it."
I pray that it is love.
Love,
Debbie
