Spiritual Progress through Meditation
By Gita Saraydarian
“One of the purposes of meditation is to create a magnetic field around you, charged with psychic energy. It is this field that will eventually serve as a contact mechanism between you and the Higher Worlds.” (Challenge for Discipleship, Ch. 44.)
Scientific Meditation is focused and sequential thinking on the causal aspects of life. When practiced on a regular and gradient basis, meditation leads us into what is often called “enlightenment” or the process of “letting our light shine.” In the Ageless Wisdom Teachings, this light contains divine love, divine truth, and divine will.
We end the darkness of ignorance through searching, thinking, and pondering without letting our patterns and prejudices interfere in the search for truth. Perceived truth is relative to our state of consciousness. The higher we are able to build our vehicles to perceive greater truth, the more of the truth of life we will be able to observe and understand and apply. By doing so, we slowly begin to let the presence of the Divine Light come through us, first in a trickle and often interrupted by our ego and vanity and illusions, but then steadily increasing as we dare to look at life from an open and honest perspective.
This is the path of true, scientific meditation. Eventually, our entire life becomes a continuous meditation. Meditation does not mean to sit in some kind of prescribed position and do nothing. It is rather an inner poise to engage and express truth. (See five steps to Scientific Meditation.) It is a process of serious and open thinking; it is being present and conscious of all of life and the process of discovering the causes behind life's events.
The effects of such meditation are eventually visible and tangible, such as increased joy, health, love and understanding, heightened self confidence, serenity, creativity, a sense of belonging to the world and a deeply felt unity and connection to the world and humanity. In short, it is a healthy, happy, creative, productive, and engaged life. It eventuates into a life of adaptation to increasingly higher values. These improved life conditions help us proceed on the path of growth and expansion from the inner part of our life. A beautiful inner life expresses itself in the outer life as well. The inner and outer expansions move in tandem as long as the person meditating is truly expressing his or her meditation discoveries into daily, practical, and tangible expressions. Our inner life must be expressed in our outer world so that we are not spaced out but are examples of usefulness and practicality in all ways.
The great teachers, saints, philosophers, prophets as well as men and women of great impact on the development of human culture and civilization developed the ability to receive divine light, hold that light in their vehicles, and radiate it by translating it into practical expression in all fields of human endeavor.
How do you know you are progressing internally and externally?
Here are some signs to help you map your progress:
- Your dedication, rhythm, and regularity in spiritual striving becomes steady; you no longer make excuses for what you do and do not do. There is an inner honesty to face oneself in truth.
- You find practical ways to continuously serve and express your growing, inner wisdom; you remain engaged throughout your life.
- You have great humility, which increases with age and experience.
- You have a positive attitude toward the obstacles in your life; there is increased understanding of how overcoming obstacles make us grow.
- You are healthy; especially emotional, mental, and spiritual health.
- You are inclusive and non-separative.
- You listen to yourself; you keep your nose out of others' business.
These are signs that map the level of your spiritual maturity.
Here is a brief clip from a lecture I gave about “mapping our progress in meditation.”
Enjoy!
